Shared Living

Shared living is a unique living option for adults with intellectual disabilities or autism who have section 21 or 29 waiver funding and reside in Maine.  It allows the individual the option to be matched with a home provider in the community.  A highlight of this living situation is that it honors the consumer’s choice in which type of home setting they reside in and with whom they live with as well.  The consumer is provided the opportunity to participate with the home provider and their family in all of the day to day activities as well as inclusion in the community.  The hope for every shared living setting is that the consumer experiences a stable support system and higher quality of life then may be attained in group living.

What does a shared living provider do?

Every shared living setting is unique as is the individual being supported. The SLP will provide a clean and healthy living environment for the individual andis responsible to provide daily support and care as outlined in the person’s “person centered plan”.  The SLP acts as an important support team member to help the individual identify and reach their goals.
